Position Title: Epidemiologist
Location: Hybrid – Supporting Montgomery County
Position End Date: 09/29/2025
Overview:
The CDC Foundation is partnering with the CDC and local and state agencies to provide additional staffing for the Overdose Data to Action (OD2A) initiative. Through this effort, the Foundation will place epidemiologists in jurisdictions that need support in achieving OD2A goals. These professionals will carry out surveillance and epidemiological tasks, including helping partners collect and share overdose data, analyzing trends in fatal (SUDORS) and nonfatal (DOSE) overdoses, launching innovative surveillance projects, and sharing findings to guide local prevention and response strategies.
Minimum Qualifications:
– Master’s degree (preferably in public health or a related field)
– Minimum of two years of experience analyzing qualitative and quantitative data
– Demonstrated ability to publish in peer-reviewed journals and present at conferences
– Proficiency in at least one statistical software program (SAS preferred) and Microsoft Office
– Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
– Excellent written and verbal communication skills
– Experience collaborating with diverse stakeholders and forming strategic partnerships
– Solid understanding of research design and epidemiological methods
– Ability to work independently and as part of a team
– Experience working remotely with distributed teams
– Skilled in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Teams, and Zoom
Responsibilities:
– Collaborate with OD2A-funded health departments to enhance overdose surveillance data systems
– Conduct literature reviews on overdose-related topics
– Create summary reports, state-specific fact sheets, and data visualizations from overdose data
– Prepare manuscripts, surveillance reports, and data briefs
– Support health departments in submitting and validating DOSE data
– Help implement innovative surveillance strategies in OD2A jurisdictions
– Assist SUDORS data abstractors with case definitions and coding guidance
– Review and complete SUDORS closeout reports
– Support the implementation and evaluation of the Rapid Opioid Death Detection (RODD) initiative, including assessing the accuracy of case definitions
– Participate in discussions on how to effectively use OD2A data for public health action
– Attend DOSE and SUDORS workgroup meetings
– Provide training, technical support, and consultation on epidemiology and disease control
– Serve as a contact for moderately complex epidemiological issues
– Develop policies and procedures for disease control programs
