Octopus Energy Group

HQ: On-site

  • OFF: London, UK
  • Full-Time
  • Management and Finance

At Octopus Energy Trading, we’re working to revolutionize the energy industry. Our goal is to develop a forward-thinking trading strategy that speeds up the shift to a Net Zero future. As renewable energy grows and efforts to decarbonize heating and transportation increase, grid flexibility becomes more critical. We’re developing advanced technology to optimize everything from home EV charging to large-scale battery systems, helping to meet the global need for adaptable energy solutions.

We’re taking a fresh approach and need a team of innovative traders to match. This is a brand-new initiative within the Octopus Energy Group, giving us the opportunity to build a diverse and skilled team from the ground up—one that will explore new ways to enhance market efficiency and reduce carbon emissions from the grid.

As leaders in the energy transition, our trading team is tackling the unique challenges and unpredictability of a renewable-powered grid. This is a great chance to be part of a high-impact project where you’ll play a vital role in Octopus’ expansion in the fast-moving energy market.

About the role:

We’re seeking a flexible Intraday Power Trader who’s eager to take on a variety of responsibilities. Initially, your main focus will be on optimizing our UK battery fleet (currently around 600MW), including day-ahead and intraday trading, engaging with the balancing mechanism, and participating in frequency and reserve services. We’ll rely on your expertise to help automate key processes. As automation increases, your focus will expand—possibly to include battery trading in other European markets, interconnector trading, or exploring new UK trading opportunities like algorithm development.

You’ll be a crucial part of a team delivering transformative solutions to meet the urgent global demand for energy flexibility.

Team culture and vision are essential to us. Here’s what some team members have to say:

Celyn Simmonds: “Octopus Energy Trading is a new division within the Octopus Group, handling all short-term trading for the Group. We’re building a 24/7 trading desk, supported by top-tier developers, to optimize our flexible assets (batteries, EVs, heat pumps), retail, and renewable portfolios, while also taking speculative positions. We’re a small, fast-moving team with a start-up vibe, backed by the resources of a larger company.”

Alissa Tripp: “Being part of the Octopus trading team has been amazing—it’s a space where innovation and collaboration lead to real impact. The dynamic environment has pushed me to grow in unexpected ways.”

If you’re passionate and experienced in UK power trading and operations, we’d love to hear from you.

What You’ll Do – Initially:

– Oversee daily trading decisions for our UK battery portfolio
– Manage outage requests and adjust trading schedules accordingly
– Use your knowledge of trading markets, the balancing mechanism, and ancillary services to make smart, flexible asset deployment decisions
– Ensure compliance with relevant regulations, particularly TCLC
– Collaborate with developers to identify and implement valuable tools and automation—especially to ensure battery performance outside of working hours
– Track performance against various benchmarks, including how batteries hedge against retail and generation imbalance exposure
– Stay informed about new schemes and market opportunities

What You’ll Do – Once Automation Frees Up Time:

– Explore new value-adding opportunities through short-term power trading
– This may involve launching battery trading in other international markets (Octopus operates in France, Germany, Spain, Italy, the US, and New Zealand), or developing new trading strategies (e.g., interconnectors or algorithmic trading)
– Opportunities may arise from business needs (e.g., signing a battery contract) or your own entrepreneurial insights
– Start with light-touch, manual trading to test new ideas, then collaborate with developers and data scientists to build tools and automation

What You’ll Need:

– Experience in power trading or a related field—ideally with UK battery trading experience
– Passion for decarbonization and grid flexibility
– Strong analytical skills and the ability to make quick, informed decisions
– Understanding of the key drivers in the spot power market
– Python skills for data analysis are a plus, but not required
– Drive to succeed in a fast-paced, competitive environment
– Ability to stay engaged with the market, even during periods of low volatility

If this sounds like you, we’d love to hear from you.

Ready to join us? We want to make sure you have everything you need to thrive. If you need any accommodations or have specific preferences, let us know and we’ll tailor the interview process to suit you.

Research shows that some people, especially women, may hesitate to apply unless they meet every requirement. If this role excites you, we encourage you to apply—you might be exactly who we’re looking for. At Octopus, we value honesty, empathy, and decency. Our people are our greatest strength, and the diverse perspectives they bring are key to our success. As an equal opportunity employer, we welcome everyone and are committed to providing a fair, inclusive workplace.
