The Chief Development Officer (CDO) will be a key member of the executive leadership team, responsible for guiding the firm’s growth strategy and strengthening its market position. This senior leader will direct all marketing, strategic business development, corporate communications, and pursuit management activities to increase market share, deepen client relationships, and enhance the firm’s competitive standing within the environmental and engineering services sector.
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic Leadership
• Create and implement comprehensive business development and marketing strategies that align with the firm’s growth goals and market opportunities.
• Lead strategic planning to identify new markets, service areas, and geographic expansion prospects.
• Work closely with the CEO and executive team to set annual revenue goals and growth targets.
• Offer strategic insight on industry trends, market conditions, and emerging opportunities.
Business Development
• Oversee firmwide business development activities, including establishing systems and metrics to monitor pipeline progress and win rates.
• Build and sustain strategic relationships with major clients, industry partners, and key stakeholders.
• Lead pursuit efforts for major strategic opportunities, coordinating cross-functional teams.
• Develop and execute client relationship strategies to improve retention and expand services with existing accounts.
• Supervise proposal development to ensure quality, responsiveness, and competitive positioning.
Marketing and Communications
• Oversee all marketing initiatives, including brand management, digital marketing, content creation, and market research.
• Direct the firm’s corporate communications strategy, including media relations, thought leadership, and crisis communication.
• Maintain consistent brand messaging across all platforms.
• Guide the creation of marketing materials, case studies, and technical content that highlight the firm’s expertise.
• Manage the firm’s digital presence, including its website, social media channels, and online engagement activities.
Team Leadership
• Build, mentor, and lead a high-performing team in business development, marketing, and communications.
• Promote strong collaboration between business development and technical delivery teams.
• Set clear goals, performance measures, and professional development plans for team members.
• Distribute resources effectively across offices and service areas to maximize results.
Capture and Pursuit Management
• Implement and manage a structured pursuit process for major opportunities.
• Lead go/no-go decisions for significant pursuits.
• Coordinate proposal teams to ensure technical strength and persuasive value propositions.
• Develop winning themes and competitive strategies for key pursuits.
• Conduct debriefs and lessons-learned reviews to improve future win rates.
Required Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in Business, Marketing, Engineering, Environmental Science, or related field; MBA or advanced degree preferred.
• At least 15 years of progressive leadership experience in business development, marketing, or similar roles.
• At least 10 years of experience in professional services, preferably within environmental, engineering, or consulting firms.
• Proven success in driving revenue growth and meeting business development goals.
• Demonstrated ability to lead and develop high-performing teams.
• Strong knowledge of the environmental and engineering services market, including client needs, procurement practices, and competitive landscape.
• Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to engage effectively with C-suite leaders and technical experts.
• Strategic thinker with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience working in firms with more than $250 million in annual revenue.
• Established relationships within key client sectors, including government, corporate, and institutional markets.
• Experience with mergers, acquisitions, or integration activities.
• Professional certifications such as Certified Business Development Professional (CBDP).
