Metabase

HQ: San Francisco, CA

  • OFF: Remote
  • Full-Time
  • Product

Metabase gives people an easy way to understand their data, from small startups getting started quickly to large enterprises with tens of thousands of users. That’s why so many people love using it.

We build a product that’s genuinely enjoyable to use in a highly technical space, serving a wide range of users across our two core areas: internal business intelligence and embedded analytics.

Our business is growing, and we’re expanding the product in both depth and scope. In particular, we’re building more AI-driven features and are looking for a Product Manager to join our technically minded, UX-focused, craftsmanship-oriented team.

Product management at Metabase is different from many other places. We place strong emphasis on deeply understanding user problems, grasping the technical realities of the product, and delivering software that is reliably simple and aligned with user needs. The role rewards curiosity, empathy, and structured thinking rather than strict metric-driven optimization or a relentless push to ship at all costs. We ship—but we ship thoughtfully.

Responsibilities

As with other PMs on the team, you will:
– Develop deep understanding and empathy for user needs in your focus areas through reviewing issues, tickets, documentation, interviews, and quantitative data.
– Understand how the product works at a technical level. You don’t need to code, but you should be curious and able to develop solid instincts about what is easy or hard to build.
– Create strategies to address clusters of user needs in well-considered ways, delivering product documentation that frames these needs clearly for designers and engineers.
– Guide projects forward, maintaining focus and momentum while continuously reassessing scope, remaining flexible, and considering technical and UX constraints.
– Follow up on project outcomes, both qualitatively and quantitatively.
– Collaborate with the team by giving and receiving feedback and sharing ideas to advance the product.

You will also:
– Identify opportunities to apply ML and LLMs to the product through strong intuition about use cases and targeted, benchmark-based experimentation.
– Support AI project development with clear, quantified success metrics, including defining benchmarks, sourcing example data, and estimating likely performance limits.
– Help the broader PM team learn how to ship and iterate on LLM-driven features.

Responsibilities do not include:
– Managing people, corralling uncooperative teams, writing code, creating mockups, or using JIRA.

About You
– Enthusiastic about diving into the unpredictable world of LLM-powered projects.
– Interested in staying current with LLM and related technology developments, ideally with a habit of tinkering on your own.
– A careful thinker who can handle detailed work while keeping the larger system in mind.
– Appreciative of clean, powerful user experiences and the effort required to create them.
– Able to maintain a long-term vision while breaking it into small, valuable steps.
– Comfortable working asynchronously on a global team and strong in written communication.
– More motivated by product-building than people-management.

Skills and Experience
– At least 3 years building and shipping ML products within Product and Engineering teams, with solid understanding of the underlying mechanisms.
– At least 5 years as a PM in a technical environment (not a junior PM role), shipping user-facing software with real technical complexity. Experience in analytics, databases, or developer tools is a plus but not required.
– Demonstrated experience using LLMs as components in complex workflows (professionally or personally) with strong understanding of how they work, not just simple prompting.
– Experienced in influencing others to deliver work consistently without relying on authority.
– Skills you do not need: current coding ability, customer management, cloud infrastructure expertise, or horse whispering.

When applying, ensure your cover letter or resume clearly outlines your ML and LLM experience.

We’re a fully distributed global team (half outside the U.S.) working asynchronously with plenty of uninterrupted time, supporting one another in doing the best work of our careers. We offer flexibility, autonomy, and an environment focused on growth and learning. We prioritize long-term value over short-term hacks, and we recently raised a $30M Series B to continue building sustainably for years ahead.

For U.S. applicants: Metabase participates in the federal E-Verify program to confirm employment authorization for newly hired U.S.-based employees. E-Verify is only used after hire and is not a pre-screening tool.
