Independent Contractor | Remote with Occasional Campus Visits | Flexible, Project-Based Work
If you are a current or former Controller or CFO in higher education seeking meaningful project assignments—either as supplemental income or as a post‑retirement career option—these contract roles offer flexibility. Projects typically require 10–30 hours per week and may last from several weeks to a few months.
CampusWorks is looking for seasoned higher‑education finance professionals to serve as Interim Controllers or Finance Consultants on a contract basis. You will lend your expertise to institutions needing temporary, high‑level support during transitions, compliance reviews, or process improvement efforts.
This is a temporary consulting role, not a full-time position—ideal for professionals who enjoy stepping in, addressing challenges, and delivering measurable results.

• Perform accounting, financial reporting, and financial analysis functions while managing daily institutional financial activities
• Advise on the development of financial policies, programs, and procedures, and prepare statements, forecasts, and analyses
• Provide direction and oversight for current finance projects and priorities
• Evaluate finance department efficiency
• Consult with higher‑ed clients on a range of financial issues
• Help clients align policies, processes, procedures, and staffing with their Finance ERP systems
What You May Do (Depending on the Institution)
• Offer interim leadership in areas such as general accounting, grants, purchasing, fixed assets, and disbursements
• Work with campus leaders and auditors to evaluate processes and propose improvements
• Prepare and review reconciliations, interim reports, and financial statements
• Support compliance with state and federal grants and institutional policies
• Strengthen internal controls, improve reporting, and align operations with strategic objectives
• Guide optimization of systems such as Ellucian Banner, Colleague, Workday, or Jenzabar
• Lead workshops, document business processes, and support knowledge transfer
• Advise on emerging trends and regulatory updates affecting higher‑education finance
What We’re Seeking
• At least 5 years of experience in higher‑education finance, accounting, or business office leadership
• Prior experience as a Controller, CFO, or Finance Director strongly preferred
• Proficiency with ERP systems such as Banner, Colleague, Workday, or Jenzabar
• Strong knowledge of accrual accounting, grants, AP/AR, tax reporting, and compliance
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to work independently
• Bachelor’s degree required; CPA or MBA preferred
• Consulting experience is helpful but not required
Engagement Details
• Project‑based consulting with hours and duration determined by client needs
• 1099 independent contractor structure—ideal for those seeking flexible work
• Remote engagement with possible limited on‑site work depending on the client
• Contractors are engaged for the length of each assignment and may be invited to future projects, but ongoing work or consistent hours are not guaranteed. You may accept or decline any project based on your availability and interest.
