The Data Foundation team sits within the Platform Engineering organization at Wealthsimple. It’s made up of skilled software developers and database specialists and is split into three groups: Data Stores, Data Integrations, and Data Streaming.

We’re looking for an experienced Data Engineer or Database Administrator to join our Data Stores team. You will design, maintain, and administer our main analytics data warehouses on Redshift and Snowflake, while also working with stakeholders to ensure reliable operations for our RDS Aurora Postgres databases.

These systems support critical financial processes and client data. You’ll collaborate closely with Data Science, Engineering, and Product teams to fine‑tune performance, maintain data quality, and build scalable solutions as we continue to grow. You should bring deep expertise in at least one of these database technologies and be eager to learn the others.

In this role, you will:
• Design, build, and support database infrastructure across dev, test, and production
• Monitor performance and implement query and system optimizations
• Create and manage backup and recovery processes while ensuring data integrity
• Apply and maintain security controls, including access and encryption
• Write Python scripts for automation, monitoring, and maintenance
• Work with engineering teams to refine schemas and queries
• Share best practices and contribute to code reviews
• Plan and perform upgrades and migrations with minimal downtime
• Maintain clear documentation for architecture and procedures
• Join the on‑call rotation for database issues

What you’ll bring:
• 5+ years of hands‑on production experience with at least one of Redshift, Snowflake, or PostgreSQL
• Strong Python scripting skills for automation
• Solid knowledge of database internals, tuning, and optimization
• Experience with high‑availability setups and disaster recovery
• Understanding of database security and compliance standards
• Experience monitoring and troubleshooting databases
• Strong grasp of indexing, query optimization, and execution plans
• Familiarity with Terraform and GitHub
• Background in infrastructure‑as‑code and change‑management tooling
• Excellent problem‑solving and attention to detail
• Strong communication skills and comfort working with diverse stakeholders

Bonus skills:
• Experience reducing cloud costs, especially in AWS
• Background in fintech systems and related compliance needs
• Familiarity with Kubernetes or similar platforms
• Knowledge of additional database technologies
• Contributions to open‑source database tools
• Exposure to data observability or visualization tools such as Preset or Datadog
