Position Highlights:
Position Title: Epidemiologist
Location: Hybrid, supporting Montgomery County
Position End Date: 09/29/2025

Overview:
The CDC Foundation is partnering with CDC and state and local agencies to provide additional staff to support surveillance, prevention, and response activities within the Overdose Data to Action (OD2A) program. Through this cooperative agreement, the Foundation will hire epidemiologists for OD2A jurisdictions needing epidemiologic expertise to carry out program goals. The epidemiologist will conduct surveillance and other epidemiologic work, including supporting partners in collecting and sharing drug overdose data; analyzing fatal and nonfatal overdose patterns using systems such as SUDORS and DOSE; implementing innovative surveillance projects; and sharing key findings to guide community prevention and response efforts.

Minimum Qualifications:
• Master’s degree (preferably in public health or a related field)
• At least two years of experience leading qualitative and quantitative data analysis
• Demonstrated ability to publish in peer-reviewed journals and present research at conferences
• Proficiency in at least one statistical software program (SAS preferred) and Microsoft Office
• Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple priorities
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Experience working collaboratively with diverse partners and building strategic relationships, with strong interpersonal skills for teamwork and engagement across CDC and external organizations
• Solid understanding of research design and epidemiologic study implementation
• Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
• Experience working remotely with virtual teams
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Teams, and Zoom

Responsibilities:
• Collaborate with overdose surveillance teams in OD2A-funded health departments to improve epidemiologic data processes
• Conduct literature reviews on overdose-related topics
• Develop summary materials, state-specific fact sheets, and data visualizations on fatal and nonfatal overdose trends
• Prepare manuscripts, surveillance reports, and data briefs
• Assist health departments with DOSE data submissions, including validating site reports
• Support innovative surveillance efforts within OD2A-funded jurisdictions
• Provide guidance to SUDORS data abstractors on applying case definitions and interpreting coding guidance
• Assist with completing or reviewing SUDORS closeout reports
• Support implementation and evaluation of rapid opioid death detection (RODD) activities, including assessing case definition validity when applicable
• Participate actively in discussions on how to use OD2A data to guide action
• Attend DOSE and SUDORS workgroup meetings
• Provide training, technical assistance, and consultation on epidemiology and disease control
• Serve as a point of contact for personnel on moderately complex epidemiologic issues
• Develop policies and procedures for new and existing disease control programs

Special Notes:
This position supports a dynamic public health program, and duties may shift as needs evolve. Any changes to responsibilities will require written approval from both the CDC Foundation and the Montgomery County Department of Health to ensure alignment with the county’s public health priorities.
