About the Role
The Director of Content Strategy will define and lead Xero’s global content direction. This role is responsible for crafting and executing strategies that enhance our brand voice, align with business goals, and deliver influential thought leadership that resonates with our audiences. This leader will ensure a cohesive content approach across all regions and platforms, maintaining consistency while honoring local differences. Reporting to the SVP of Marketing Communications, the Director will manage a team of content experts and collaborate with Regional Marketing, SEO, Education, Communications, and other key departments.
Strategic Leadership
– Design and implement a global content strategy that aligns with Xero’s goals and brand identity.
– Set a clear vision and roadmap for content that supports customer acquisition, engagement, and retention across all stages of the marketing funnel.
– Lead the creation of impactful thought leadership content for small businesses and accounting/bookkeeping partners.
– Work with regional teams to tailor content strategies to local market needs.
– Collaborate with cross-functional teams to build a unified content ecosystem.
Content Creation & Distribution
– Oversee the production of high-quality, engaging content in various formats such as blogs, articles, reports, whitepapers, and videos.
– Collaborate with the customer research team to develop surveys and use Xero’s proprietary data for storytelling.
– Build a network of expert writers to scale content production efficiently.
– Work with channel leads to develop and execute a distribution strategy across paid, earned, owned, and shared media.
– Partner with the Media Team to expand content reach through strategic partnerships.
– Lead the editorial direction of Xero’s global blog.
– Maintain a consistent editorial calendar aligned with business goals and marketing campaigns.
Team Leadership & Budget Oversight
– Manage and mentor a team of three direct reports: Blog Manager, Head of Mid-Funnel Content, and Head of Content and Campaigns.
– Oversee the content budget, ensuring efficient use of resources for maximum impact.
– Coordinate with regional teams and channel owners on distribution budgets.
– Cultivate a team culture focused on creativity, quality, and innovation.
Performance Measurement & Optimization
– Work with the Data & Analytics team to create a robust content performance framework.
– Define KPIs and reporting systems to measure content effectiveness and ROI.
– Use data insights to refine and improve content strategies.
– Present performance results and strategic insights to senior leadership.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
– Collaborate with global and regional communications teams to develop media-ready thought leadership content.
– Act as the organization’s content expert, ensuring consistency in tone and messaging.
– Work closely with brand, social, communications, and product marketing teams.
– Align content strategies with regional marketing needs.
– Coordinate with the SEO team to enhance content visibility through search.
Required Experience & Skills
– 10+ years in content strategy and marketing, including 5+ years in leadership roles.
– Proven success in developing B2B or SaaS content strategies that drive results.
– Experience managing global content initiatives with regional adaptations.
– Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills; journalism background is a plus.
– Ability to use proprietary data and research for compelling storytelling.
– Excellent collaboration and stakeholder management abilities.
– Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Journalism, or a related field.
Preferred Qualifications
– Background in accounting, financial services, or small business software.
– Knowledge of SEO and content marketing best practices.
– Familiarity with content management systems and marketing automation tools.
– Understanding of global content distribution strategies.
– Experience creating content for various stages of the customer journey.

Salary Range: $195,000 – $244,800 annually
