Black Ember Games, a newly formed development team within Xsolla, is seeking a Level Designer to join our design team in creating an asymmetrical multiplayer first-person shooter using Unreal Engine 5.

We’re a small, passionate team with an indie spirit, driven by our love for games. Our diverse and energetic group thrives on exploring new ideas within the genres we enjoy. We work in a hybrid model, collaborating from our offices in Berlin and Novi Sad, though fully remote work is also an option.

As a Level Designer, you’ll be responsible for crafting levels that are functional, gameplay-driven, visually engaging, and narratively rich. Our team values flexibility and innovation—if you have a better approach, we encourage you to share it and help shape our direction alongside design leadership.

Responsibilities:

– Collaborate across departments, identifying design risks early and offering constructive feedback throughout development.
– Design, prototype, and build competitive multiplayer maps for first-person shooter gameplay in Unreal Engine 5.
– Develop engaging, balanced, and readable environments that encourage fair and tactical gameplay.
– Define and refine level flow, chokepoints, sightlines, spawn logic, and cover placement to support various playstyles and weapon types.
– Use UE5 tools—including Modeling Tools, World Partition, Blueprints, and Data Layers—to block out and iterate on level geometry for smooth movement and clear spatial design.
– Work closely with other disciplines to take maps from initial concept to polished, playable experiences.
– Script and implement level features, objectives, and interactive elements (e.g., capture points, respawn systems, dynamic components) using Blueprints.
– Run regular playtests, gather feedback, and iterate quickly to improve balance, flow, and player engagement.
– Maintain clear and consistent design documentation.

Requirements:

– 3–5 years of professional experience in level design within the video game industry, using Unreal Engine 4 or 5.
– Demonstrated ability to design and iterate on game levels from initial blockout to final polish.
– Strong understanding of FPS mechanics, including weapon ranges, sightline design, player movement, cover systems, and spawn logic.
– Solid grasp of competitive balance, flow, timing, and readability in PvP map design.
– Experience with metrics-driven design and data-informed iteration.
– Proficiency in Unreal Engine 5.
– Familiarity with source control systems (e.g., Perforce) and collaborative workflows.
– Excellent communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to translate gameplay goals into compelling level designs.
– Fluent in English, both written and spoken.

Preferred Qualifications:

– Experience designing for multiple FPS, TPS, or action-adventure games.
– Knowledge of AI pathfinding and bot navigation for PvP testing and balancing.
– Understanding of lighting and material optimization for visibility and performance in competitive shooters.
– Experience optimizing multiplayer environments, including collision, lighting, and performance profiling.
– Familiarity with key principles of multiplayer shooter level design, such as readability, fairness, and learnability.
– Passion for multiplayer shooters and a strong understanding of current genre benchmarks (e.g., Counter-Strike, Rainbow Six Siege, Valorant).
