About the Roles
The Athletic is looking for a Deputy Managing Editor to join our newly established Daily Desk, with a focus on overseeing nightly coverage and ensuring we prioritize the most important stories. The Daily Desk works across the newsroom to elevate our daily reporting and capitalize on timely opportunities in the sports world. Operating from early morning to late night in North America and in coordination with our London team, we provide 24/7 coverage.
Ideal candidates will have excellent news judgment and coordination skills to help identify and launch coverage on key stories, especially during busy sports nights. The role involves editing stories—sometimes originally assigned elsewhere—and requires precision, clarity, adaptability, and speed. While primarily focused on editing, the role may also involve writing depending on news needs and staffing. Collaboration with reporters and editors across the newsroom is essential.
This is a remote position open to candidates based in the U.S. or Canada and will require regular evening and weekend work in alignment with the sports schedule.

– Serve as a lead editor for the daily news report, particularly during night shifts.
– Edit and publish a wide range of stories from sportswriters.
– Work with sports editors to coordinate breaking news coverage.
– Uphold high editorial standards, especially on complex stories.
– Manage staff and senior editors, including scheduling.
– Maintain strong communication with vertical editors to support broader coordination.
– Track story budgets and participate in key meetings and handoffs.
– Assign stories to beat and national reporters when vertical editors are unavailable.
– Collaborate with the audience team to optimize story promotion and timing.
– Coordinate with reporters and contributing editors in the field.
– Ensure adherence to style and structure, identifying and correcting issues.
– Plan coverage of major events and coordinate daily assignments with sports editors.
– Help shape a compelling and authentic editorial voice, especially for nuanced topics.
– Improve stories to ensure clarity and engagement, working collaboratively.
– Enhance workflows and best practices for the desk’s varied responsibilities.
– Work with design, photo, and other newsroom teams as needed.
– Understand SEO and identify content opportunities.
– Use real-time data to evaluate and adjust performance.
– Occasionally write and report breaking or trending news with speed and accuracy.
Requirements
– At least 8 years of experience editing various types of news stories, including breaking news.
– Strong copy editing skills with a proven ability to enhance stories and communicate effectively with colleagues.
– Experience editing news content is highly preferred.
– Prior management experience, including overseeing editors or reporters, is strongly preferred.
– Comfortable using social media platforms to monitor news.
– Willingness and ability to work nights and weekends.
– Broad interest and knowledge across multiple sports.
– Familiarity with WordPress is a plus; must be comfortable using a CMS.
– Must be eligible to work in the U.S. or Canada.
